David Miliband launched his six-point plan to get Britain’s “lost generation” of young people into work.
Writing exclusively in the Sunday Mirror , he explains the devastating impact of youth unemployment in his Tyneside constituency and outlines the urgent steps needed to tackle the problem.
The former Cabinet Minister, older brother of Labour leader Ed, who is now chairing a Commission on Youth Unemployment, says the number of 18- to 24-year-olds who have been jobless in South Shields for six months or more has rocketed by an astonishing 210 per cent over the past year.
In January last year, 150 young people in South Shields had been out of work for more than six months. But the grim statistic had spiralled by another 315 to reach 465 young unemployed by December.
Across the UK, an appalling total of one million 18- to 24-year-olds are now on the dole as a result of the Government’s failure to kick-start the economy.
Mr Miliband’s crusade echoes campaigns to force the Government to act to combat the despair of a lost generation of young people across Britain.
He is leading a commission determined to tackle the problem. Last week it produced a damning report calling for emergency Government action to deal with the timebomb of young jobless.
It warned that paying benefits and other costs linked to youth unemployment would hand taxpayers a £28billion bill over the next decade.
