Thousands could be hit by legal aid cuts

Justice secretary Kenneth Clarke announced two consultations in November last year which aim to cut the £2 billion legal aid bill.

In its document Proposals for the Reform of Legal Aid in England and Wales, the government says alternative solutions should be sought when housing and welfare benefit advice is needed, rather than resorting to legal action.

Unite estimated 100,000 of the most vulnerable in society will be hit by the plans as a campaign, Justice for All, is launched at the House of Commons today (wed jan 12). The campaign is supported by an alliance of more than 1,000 members from charities, trade unions, lawyers, community groups and members of the public. Their aim is to reverse the cuts to the legal aid budget over the next four years.

Rachael Maskell, Unite national officer for the not for profit sector said: ‘We estimate - and we expect this will be backed up by figures from the Justice Ministry - that these savage cuts to the legal aid budget will affect 100,000 of the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

‘Because of the current austerity measures which will cause joblessness, repossession of homes and relationship breakdowns, everyone should have an interest in a strong legal aid system. It could, unfortunately, be “you”.’

Unite is urging MPs to sign an early day motion calling on the government to re-think the provision of legal services for the poorest in society.
